Scrapbooking has been a favorite hobby of mine since high school. I love preserving memories and I love the creativity involved. I also really like that it's a hobby I can share with my children. I bought my oldest daughter her first scrapbook when she was 4 and she loved it. In this post I share why scrapbooking is a great hobby for kids and some tips for getting started.
Why Scrapbook With Kids?
Scrapbooking is primarily an adult hobby but is also a great activity for kids. Kids love photographs and preserving memories important to a child, are always fun to look back on later.
Scrapbooking involves lots of cutting, pasting, drawing, and writing. It can be a fun way for kids to develop these skills.
Scrapbooking requires kids to get creative and gives them a chance to express themselves.
What You'll Need To Get Started:
There a lots of scrapbooking boutiques out there with tons of great supplies but they can be pricey. Really all you need is:
-a scrapbook (I like ones with big pages personally)
- lots of colorful paper (construction paper and colored printer paper will work. Sometimes Wal-Mart has packs of scrapbooking paper with cool designs for a good price).
-paste
-scissors
-photographs
-a writing utensil
Other Affordable Supplies:
-stickers
-glitter pens
-colored pencils
-old birthday and holiday cards (this is my very favorite scrapbooking supply)
-mementos from fun trips and events. (things like: movie tickets, carnival tickets, napkins, etc...)
-magazines
Tips for getting started:
Have your child look through family photos and choose ones they like or are important to them and then print them copies.
Help your child cut out pictures and cute sayings from old birthday and holiday cards to use in their scrapbook.
Let your child be creative and make his or her scrapbook whatever he or she wants it to be. Don't expect perfection.
Get your own scrapbook and create along side your child. Family hobbies are fantastic bonding opportunities. Plus it's fun!
