Nature Print Salt Dough Ornaments

We had a 25 pound bag of flour rip open and spill all over our pantry earlier this week. Luckily the majority of it stayed inside the bag and I was able to repackage it. Instead of wasting the several cups that did spill out, we decided to attempt making some salt dough ornaments, and I love how they turned out!

Salt Dough Recipe:
Salt dough is simple to make and only requires a couple ingredients. You will need:
-2 cups of flour
-1 cup of salt
-1 cup of water

Mix the flour and salt together in a bowl. Then slowly add the water and stir until a soft dough forms. You can add a little more flower if it's too sticky. It should feel similar to playdough.

Nature Print Ornaments:
Grab a cutting board, a rolling pin, and a little extra flour and roll out your dough just like you would cookie dough. You want your dough to be about a 1/4 inch thick.

Cut out round ornaments using a cookie cutter or a plastic cup.

Now it's time to decorate! We used various nature items my kids collected around our yard like leaves, sea shells, flowers, and pinecones. Pick a leaf or whatever nature item you want to use. Lay it over your ornament and gently apply pressure over it with a finger. Carefully peel it up and you will be left with a stamp or print. We got some really cool prints from pinecones and sea shells. If you have any issues with your nature items sticking to the dough, sprinkle a little flower over the top of your salt dough before making your print. This should help prevent sticking.

Using a sharp pencil, push a hole through the top of your ornament so you can hang it with a string or ribbon later. Then set your ornaments in a warm place to dry, flipping them over every few hours. They will take a couple days to dry completely.

Once they are completely dry, you can add a little color with some paints if you want to, but they look really nice without paint too. We used a little bit of watercolors for ours. Just be sure to not get the dough too wet or you'll have to set them out to dry for another couple days.

Tie a string or ribbon through the hole you made, and now your ornaments are ready to hang or give as gifts!

Water Relay Races For Kids

I don't know about your kids, but mine absolutely love games involving water and getting wet in the summer time. In  this post I share 5 of our favorite water relay races to play with friends. These are perfect for birthday parties, homeschool get togethers, and other group events. Sponge Relay: For this relay you will need: - 2 teams of several kids each -2 large sponges -4 small buckets or containers of some sort Divide your participants into 2 teams and have each team line up single file at a predetermined starting place.  Hand out a sponge to the first participant in each line. Set a bucket of water by each team. Set an empty bucket about 20 ft away from each team.  The two empty buckets should be the same size and should have a "fill line" marked half way up. On a count of 3 (or ready set go) the first participant in each line should dip their sponge in the bucket of water, run to the empty bucket, squeeze the water from their spo...

STEM Art: 21 STEAM Project Ideas

My kids love STEM projects and we're always looking for ways to add more art to our homeschool days, so I decided I am going to try to dedicate one morning a week this year to STEM art activities. In this post I share some of the ideas we're planning to try, plus a few favorites we've done in the past. What is STEM Education? STEM education is a blended and often hands on approach to teaching science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, which are some of today's fastest growing industries. STEM education offers students the opportunity to problem solve and work on real world problems and questions. Sometimes the acronym STEAM is used, to include the arts. Adding art to STEM education encourages creative thinking and problem solving skills. It can also help make the other included subjects more appealing to some students.
