Questions I was asked:
How long have you been home educating?
We've been homeschooling since my oldest was kindergarten age, so this will be our fifth year.
What is your favorite part of home educating?
It's so hard to pick any one thing, there are just so many wonderful things about homeschooling. One of my favorite things is all the extra time I get with my kids. They're growing up so fast, I want to savor it! My other favorite thing about homeschooling is being able to give my kids an individualized education. I think it's so beneficial for kids to get to play an active role in choosing what and how they learn.
How many children are you home educating? What are their ages?
I have three children, but only my oldest is school aged, she's eight, going on nine. My younger two are three and five months.
How do you incorporate arts and crafts?
We love arts and crafts. We often paint murals inspired by books we're reading. We also incorporate a lot of art in our nature journals.
Do you spend time reading other home educator's blogs?
I enjoy reading other home educator's blogs, especially when I'm looking for inspiration and ideas for our own homeschool. I've connected with so many amazing families in the time I've been involved in the blogging world.
Do you use outside help with home educating?
At the moment, we are a totally independent homeschool, and I don't use any direct help outside the home. We are a part an awesome local homeschool group that meets up weekly for play days at the park, and meets for occasional group field trips and special events. My kids attend Sunday school most weeks and we are regulars at the local library.
How do you keep on top of housework?
Honestly? I don't always. There are five of us, and a dog, living in less than a thousand square feet. It's not always perfect in here. I do my best to clean as we go during the day, rather than leaving it all for the end of the day. And I have tons of bins and containers for trying to keep stuff neat.
How do you feel about screen time and children?
I'm pretty loose about screen time. My only firm rule is no TV or on screen games until some school work is done. Pretty much as long as my kids aren't abusing the privilege, I don't put a lot of limits on it.
What is your favorite subject, and do your children enjoy it as much as you do?
Science is definitely my favorite subject. I even majored in biology in college. I also enjoy history and literature. My eight year old happens to love science too, so we try to incorporate a lot into our homeschool week. This year we're planning on learning about electricity, birds, forensics, and space.
Which books have you and your children read recently?
We just finished re-reading the first four Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder together. They are some of our very favorites. My eight year old has been working on the Billie B Brown Mystery Series.
If there was one piece of advice you could give to a new home educator, what would it be?
My advice would be that homeschooling can be whatever you want to make it. Don't compare what your doing to public school or even other homeschoolers. Create a learning environment that works for your unique situation and your unique kids.
